Kuching is Running... and Eating

I arrived in Kuching at nearly midnight on Wednesday 9th August, after 3 hours delay in Kuala Lumpur. Got an immediate temperature shock. It was 7C in Melbourne in the morning and here, here was at least 26C and very, very humid.

The Expo

Next morning I was on my way to the marathon expo to pick up my bib. Just couldn't hold my excitement any longer and went as soon as I knew the mall will be open. Yes, you read it right, Kuching Marathon expo was held at Plaza Merdeka, one of the local shopping malls. However, it didn't disappoint and was quite well organised.
It turned out I wasn't the only overexcited person picking up my package so early. There was a little crowd already queuing to at least 10 stations handing the stuff out. Didn't wait long until it was my turn to show the confirmation letter.
What I got was a nice, bright green, drawstring backpack, fluorescent yellow running vest, some samples, marathon guide and my bib of course.

Kuchingites love running

Also on Thursday I got a message from Cynthia (this amazing girl that helped me to sign up for the marathon) about a weekly run organised by CJC - City Jogger's Club. It was to start at 7pm at iCom Square and all I needed to do was just to show up and pay RM3. I though it was a great idea since I spent all previous day sitting (on air planes) and I still had 2 days until the marathon, so I got into my running gear and went to meet those local runners.

I can't even describe how happy I was I did. They are wonderful people, so nice and welcoming, and eager to run, and believe me it is not easy to run in Kuching. First obviously the weather and high humidity, then there are no beautiful tracks, water fountains, toilets and whatever else we have here in Melbourne. Yet people run, together, in groups and clubs to stay safe and share their passion. I admired their commitment and enthusiasm and joined for a 5km run along uneven roads with cars driving around, dangerous potholes and high curbs. I was welcomed, felt safe directed by voluntary marshals, got water and fruit, and couldn't stop chatting afterwards. They are great bunch of people. Miss them already.

On Saturday before the marathon Cynthia invited me to join another running group O-Run-Utans (don't you love that name). This time not for a run, but a carb-loading lunch. I was amazed and surprised again. They are so well organised, supportive and committed. I felt privileged to sit among them and they made me feel proud to be a runner. No matter the distances you run, your times or abilities, they welcome and support everybody.
They have this awesome running t-shirt with "Work for peanuts, run for bananas" quote. I thought it would be great to show off on my Melbourne running tracks, but there were non left. Just then Cynthia came to the rescue again offering her own. Thank you, you great, generous girl!

I know of two more running clubs in Kuching - Underground Runners and Hornbill Pacesetters but I wouldn't be surprised to discover there are many more, because Kuchingites just love running...

...and love eating.

What an amazing coincidence that just at the same time when the Kuching Marathon is held there is another huge event hapenning in the city. It is Kuching Food Festival (part of Kuching Festival) that runs from 28 July until 20 August at Kuching Park. There are hundreds if not thousands of food stalls with local and international treats and delicacies. From oyster omelettes to pizza, satay to French fries. Believe me, you will find something you love, and could there be a better place for carb-loading before the marathon? I don't think so.

As soon as I discovered the place I just absolutely felt I have to go there every day and try as much food as possible... well, with a little break before the marathon when I don't really like experimenting with food.
It is also very popular among locals, so be prepared for some queuing to the best stalls but hey! it is so worth it.
What a feast!
