Kyoto Marathon - Run or Not

Registration process

As an overseas runner (not sure if it’s the same case for locals) you need to first join JTB Sports Station jtbsports.jp/en/ This agency handles applications for many races in Japan, including Kyoto Marathon.

From there the application process is fast and easy. Doesn't take long and you can pay by VISA and MasterCard.

For 2018 Kyoto Marathon there was a lottery. Now it is on first come first serve basis. Once you join JTB keep an eye on your mailbox somewhere early July when they announce registration starting day.

Price

Medium.

In 2018 I paid JPY 15,000, now, in 2020 it is JPY 17,000

Communication

Better to communicate with JTB Sports Station. Any questions you send will be redirected there.

Expo

Amazing. One of if not the best I’ve been to (well, maybe Nagoya Women’s Marathon can match).

Great location, interesting stalls, tons of giveaways, fantastic merchandise, yummiest food ever and plenty more. What can I say, went there twice.

Goodie bag and giveaways

Average amount but best quality. In 2018 we even got an original Buff head cover in a nice box.

If you agree to reduce waste and don’t use paper cups on course, you’ll receive a reusable silicon cup for running that volunteers refill at every water station.

Weather conditions

Cold. It was snowing and 1C when I left my accommodation to get to the start line. After a couple of hours tough it got nice and sunny, and up to 12C. You should also be prepared that it might rain this time of year.

Course

Spectacular. Through the city, next to beautiful temples, bamboo forest, botanical gardens, along the river. Taiko drummers and dressed up crowds everywhere. Mostly flat.

Amenities on the course

Plentiful of water and food stations. They even give fresh strawberries, custard buns, local mochi.

Toilets easy to locate with visible signage, usually near water stations.

Post race village and facilities

Same location as the pre-race expo. Food & massage available. Plenty of giveaways again. Volunteers almost everywhere happy to shaw and explain what’s where.

Verdict

Fantastic. Easy to run, great atmosphere.

Perfect for beginners and those chasing PB’s.

The best marathon in the most beautiful city in the world!
